How module development works

1. Requirements. You describe what the module should do. I check your PrestaShop and PHP version, the modules already installed and, if needed, the external system’s documentation.

2. Estimate. I propose a technical solution and we agree on the scope and timeline.

3. Development. I build the module following PrestaShop module development practices, without modifying core files.

4. Testing on a copy of the shop. I test the module on a copy of the shop or in a test environment with your data, so the live shop is not affected.

5. Handover and installation. Once agreed with you, I install the module in the shop and show you how to use it.

How long it takes

Duration depends on the task. A small additional feature or a change to an existing module usually takes less time, while an integration with an external system, processing large amounts of data or connecting several systems takes longer. I give a specific timeline after reviewing the task.

What affects the scope of work

• the number of features and the complexity of the logic;

• whether the module connects to an external system, and the quality of its API or data file documentation;

• the amount of data and how often it needs to update (e.g. automatically via cron);

• your PrestaShop and PHP version, theme and modules already installed;

• whether back-office settings, multiple languages or multistore support are needed.

Is it worth building a new module if a similar one already exists?

Not always. First I check whether the task can be solved with an existing module or a change to it. I suggest a new module when ready-made solutions do not match your process or adapting them would be harder than building from scratch.
